- Godot: A versatile game engine that is both open source, as well as free.
- Unreal Engine: A very powerful engine, capable of making very pretty and awesomesauce games. It is also free; however, it's very large and may not work great on lower-end computers.
- Ren'Py: THE visual novel engine, and is the engine for Doki Doki Literature Club. Not sure how it works at all though.
- Twine: A game engine where you don't really need to know coding but want to make some sort of a story.
- GBStudio: A retro game engine, capable of making music, as well as being a drag-and-drop coding style.
- Aseprite: One of the best pixel art programs that I've used. Can be grabbed from Steam for $20, OR you can compile it from Github for free.
- Gimp: gimp :3
- Blender: 3D modeling software that is free! It's also on Steam, if that's better for you.
- FamiStudio: A music-making software for mainly NES or Famicom enthusiasts.
- JummBox: Another chiptune-esque music creator. Purely web-based, so you'd have to save the link and everything. Can be used very effectively if you want to learn it.
- LMMS: Free open-source music software. Can use a ton of stuff, including MIDI, .sf2 files, and the like.
- OpenGameArt: This has a BUNCH of various assets, both 2D and 3d, as well as music and other stuff on it if you don't have the ability to make them yourself.
- A bunch of texture databases:
- Kenney: A 2D and 3D asset compilation. Has borders, UI stuff, models, and more.
